Key Insights:

  • Germany’s approach to driving wallet adoption includes an innovation competition (“Funke”) and a consultation process with civil society.
  • Interoperability profiles, such as OpenID4VC and the Dutch Decentralized Identity Interoperability Profile (DDIP), aim to promote adoption and innovation by providing a common subset of technologies and specifications.
  • The role of big tech companies in providing mobile operating systems and browsers is a double-edged sword, enabling better user experiences but also raising concerns about control and data monetization.
  • Governments have a crucial role in setting regulations and fostering an equal playing field for all stakeholders in the digital identity ecosystem.

Strategies:

  • Governments can promote innovation and adoption by creating testbeds, innovation competitions, and consultation processes.
  • Interoperability profiles, updated in a cadence, can help organizations and vendors align on a common set of specifications and technologies, enabling interoperability.
  • Separating the roles of big tech companies as infrastructure providers (mobile operating systems, browsers) and product providers (wallets) can help address concerns about control and data monetization.
